The Scorpions
I got a call to do a studio publicity shoot for the label.
This was the first time the band would be in our country. Their manager contacted me before the shoot to inform me that none of the members spoke English and that he would not be there to translate. No problem. Shot twenty or so roll's of both B&W and color. Did six set-ups in the studio, and my hair and makeup artists hardly noticed they didn't speak English. In my studio, I had 6-foot-high windows which were great for available light shooting. During one of the set-ups, I motioned to the guys to come over to the windows, and I popped on a 20mm lens super-wide and had them bring their fingers toward the lens to create distorted fingers. Ten years later; when I met the drummer, he laughed when we started to talk about the shoot. He said that they had all spoken English even then and were just putting me on.
