Eric Clapton
Eric Clapton of the early Seventies was nothing like the clean and sober Eric Clapton of the late Nineties. He was playing the Coliseum in Long Island and was, well, a bit out of it. Before the show started, all the lights were turned off and within a couple minutes turned back on with Eric standing at the microphone with guitar in hand. It was a bit odd, I thought to myself, because most performers relish walking on stage to a crowd of cheering fans. After the last song, the venue went completely black again except for a few low-level stage floor lights. That's when I saw two roadies walk over to Clapton and lift him off the ground, one on either side of his arms. Then, they promptly carried him off stage, a little like moving a heavy floor lamp. Thank God we did not lose him like so many other artists who didn't make it through that era.
